How Often Should You Check the Salt in Your Water Softener?

If you have a water softener in your home, it's doing a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes. And at the center of it all is a simple but essential part: the salt.

The brine tank, which holds salt pellets, powers the regeneration process that keeps your water softener working properly. Without enough salt, your system can’t remove hard minerals from the water. That means chalky buildup, dry skin, and other hard water problems start creeping back in.

How Often Should You Check It?

In most homes, checking your salt tank once a month is enough. Make sure the tank is at least half full of clean, dry salt pellets. Also, watch for hardened salt at the bottom, sometimes called a salt bridge, which can block the system from working.

Some households may need to check more often, especially if:

  • You use a lot of water

  • Your water is extra hard

  • You have an older or less efficient system

What Kind of Salt Should You Use?

High-purity salt pellets designed for water softeners are your best bet. Rock salt or table salt can lead to sludge and buildup in the tank, which affects performance. If you're unsure which salt is best for your system or local water, we’re happy to help.

Signs Your Salt is Low

  • Spots on dishes or buildup on faucets

  • Dry skin or itchy feeling after showering

  • The system is louder or regenerates more often

  • The tank is empty or full of standing water and mush

A quick refill with the right salt often fixes the problem fast.
